Most Memorable Banding Moments:

1983 - Playing with HYCB, winning the National Youth Championships (Aspirations, Derek Bourgeois). Playing first at the RCM on October 9th, we then played a reprise performance in the RAH just before the Championship Section began - the place was packed to the rafters and the atmosphere was phenomenal and still brings back that feeling of elation when we lifted the trophy!

2002 - Playing with the massed bands of Manchester at the closing ceremony of the 17th Commonwealth Games on August 4th. It rained and rained that night, and I've never been so wet in all my life, but the excitement in the stadium was incredible and the final performance was fantastic. Knowing that I had friends around the globe who, along with an estimated one billion other viewers, were watching the 300+ strong brass band play as part of the pageant-symbolism of UK and Manchester life was fantastic, but to have my two sons tell me that they'd seen me on TV as well was brilliant!

Most Embarrassing Banding Moment:

Bare faced cheek: With brilliant organisation, coordinating a "spotter" with another player to open the curtains, we arranged a "mass-moon" through the chalet window at Pontins (Prestatyn) for our conductor...only to find afterward that the guy he was walking and talking with as he went past was the great Harry Mortimer!
